Super Therm®

Super Therm®: Longest Lasting Solar Heat Reflective Paint

Super Therm® is a ceramic, water-based, heat reflective paint and thermal barrier designed to block solar heat, heat load, moisture, and air from reaching a surface.  It can significantly reduce surface temperatures making it an ideal solution for many applications.  Super Therm® is a combination of high performance aliphatic urethanes, elastomeric acrylics, and resin additives which produces a tough yet flexible long-lasting insulating paint.

You can use Super Therm® to insulate and reduce heat for: metal warehouses or storage buildings, asphalt shingle and metal roofs, concrete walls, HVAC housings, ducts, air intakes, shipping containers, container homes, quonset huts, sheds, refrigerated trucks, animal trailers, condensation reduction, and more.

NOTE: Laboratory and Field project results as stated here may vary according to different climate conditions.

Super Therm® contains 4 unique ceramics to block over 95% of the three radiation sources from the sun (visual light, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared).  A minimal application thickness of 1/100th inch (10 mils DFT) effectively blocks heat transfer and repels it from the surface.  Super Therm® is a flexible insulating coating with low permeability that can greatly extend the useful life of a roof by reducing expansion and contraction (material fatigue) of the substrate.  When applied to a metal surface, it prevents condensation, corrosion, and surface deterioration as well as keeping it cool while in direct sunlight.

Rated as a 20-year cool roof coating by ENERGY STAR® and with documented projects lasting over 30 years, Super Therm® is one of the most effective and longest-lasting thermal heat reflective coatings on the market.  We are authorized distributors for Super Therm® and can ship throughout the US.

“Just wanted to let you know that the Super Therm coating is 100% successful. The outdoor temperature has been around 80 to 84 degrees and I am working in the workshop in complete comfort without any air conditioning!! Thank you for all your help in making sure it was applied correctly, and you can be sure I am letting everyone know what a great product you have. All the best, Brian.”
Brian Webb, FL

“We are building a home from shipping containers….Superior Coating’s Super Therm product is what we used to coat the exterior.  Warren made sure we had an accurate measurement to determine the quantity, guided us through purchase and shipping, and worked with our contractor to ensure successful application.  We are thrilled with the results.”

Super Therm® Developed With The Help of NASA Researchers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center

NASA Space ShuttleJE Pritchett, the developer of Super Therm® and the CEO of Superior Products International II (SPI Coatings) decided to collaborate with engineers at the research centers at NASA to develop Super Therm®.  After 2 years of testing more than 4,000 different kinds of ceramic components, including those used in NASA’s space shuttles, 3 ceramics with the greatest ability to reflect radiation and the lowest heat conductivity were ultimately selected.   The ceramics used in Super Therm® do not conduct heat.

Super Therm® is a thin insulation thermal barrier coating, and when tested at temperatures up to 212° F/100°C the coating’s performance was not affected.  After continued research, a fourth ceramic was included to block infrared radiation.  The result was a high performance 20-year Energy Star rated coating that effectively blocks and reflects 95% of solar heat load from visual light, Ultra Violet (UV light) and infrared rays.  Super Therm® can be used for a wide range of industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

Harry Reid International Airport – Super Therm® Project

Significant Solar Heat Reduction on Passenger Boarding Bridges

Super Therm®, along with Rust Grip and Enamo Grip 5000, were used at Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas for solar heat load reduction and improved passenger comfort for aircraft boarding bridges given the hot environment in the summer.

On average, summer temperatures in Las Vegas reach 104°F and the steel passenger boarding bridges can get very hot, with minimal air flow.  The Clark County Department of Aviation extensively tested various competitive products for about 2 years and Super Therm® ceramic heat reflective coating was chosen as it outperformed the closest competing product by more than 20°F on the bridge roofs.

Super Therm® was applied at the standard 10 mils (250 microns) dry thickness, compared to 30 mils (0.75mm) of the closest competitor, and with better performance, allowed for a more comfortable environment and more energy efficient air conditioning.  Enamo Grip 5000 was used as a topcoat on the rotunda segments for extra protection against additional movement and wear.  Rust Grip was also applied over rails or any other components showing signs of rust.

When temperatures at the southwest desert airport soar, the external surface temperature of its metal boarding bridges can exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93°C), and most of that heat radiates into the boarding bridges.

SPI Coatings was definitely the firm that just knocked it out of the park for us.

Doug McMahan

Managing Director for Facilities and Maintenance, Clark County Department of Aviation, NV

To test the performance of Super Therm®, the project team recorded temperatures inside the bridges before starting the preconditioned air units, and also measured the time needed to cool them.  McMahan reports that coated bridges were cooler to begin with—staying with a few degrees of ambient temperatures even as the day warmed up – and also cooled down faster.

Super Therm helped drop the interior temperature of the jet bridges to within three or four degrees of the ambient air temperature.  Because it takes less time to cool coated bridges, the airport’s preconditioned air units will consume less energy and should last longer as they are running for shorter periods of time.

Clark County Department of Aviation will consider testing and using Super Therm®, on buildings and rooftop air-conditioning units. Other southwest U.S. airports, including Tucson International, use Super Therm® on roofs and storage facilities.

Super Therm® FAQ

1. What is the difference between Super Therm® and other heat reflective paints?
Many other heat reflective paints and coatings on the market reflect only visible light and become relatively ineffective when they get dirty in as little as 1-2 years. With 4 unique ceramics, Super Therm® reflects more than 95% of ALL heat energy including infrared, ultraviolet (UV), and visible light and continues to perform even when it gets dirty.  Also, with a urethane base, Super Therm® is much longer lasting than other commercial heat reflective paints.  While Super Therm® is an ENERGY STAR rated 20-year cool roof coating, existing projects lasting over 30 years with no chipping, cracking, or peeling and still performing within thermal specifications have been documented.
2. How can Super Therm® extend the life of a roof aside from just coating it?
Since Super Therm® can significantly reduce the temperature of a roof substrate, there will be much less expansion and contraction of roof materials when they heat up during the day and cool down at night. This will significantly reduce “material fatigue” on substrates and pressure on rivets and seams.  Over time causes this causes fewer cracks, leaks, and a longer roof life.
3. Can Super Therm® be used on flat roofs?
Yes.  For areas where there is ponding, Super Therm® can be top coated with Enamo Grip or SP Seal Coat.
4. Can Super Therm® be applied to metal, EPDM, asphalt, or other surfaces?
Super Therm® can be applied to a variety of surfaces on its own or with Super Base (HS) or SP Primer as a base coat for sealing.

Surfaces include:

  1. Aluminum, new metal, wood – apply directly
  2. Asphalt, EPDM, Modified Bitumen, TPO, single ply membranes – prime with Super Base (HS)
  3. Concrete – prime with Super Base (HS).
  4. PVC – prime with SP Primer
  5. Steel with rust – prime with Rust Grip®
5. How is Super Therm® sold?
Super Therm® is sold in 5-gallon pails and 1-gallon cans.
